Travel writers behaving badly

by Neil MacLean on February 20, 2006

If you thought public relations professionals got a poor press with the Bad Pitch blog, take a look at its close cousin the Bad Hack blog which offers a platform for PR’s to spill the beans about badly behaved journalists.

It’s very new but I seriously doubt that the writers will run short of material.

Travel PR’s, in particular, will come up with a few good stories. After all there is nothing like a bit of distance from the office, a steamy climate and easy access to the minibar to bring out the worst in a travel hack.

My contribution of the day – if I can offer it from a distance – concerns a journalist on a press trip to the Phillipines who smuggled a prostitute into his room at the very smart Manila Hotel. Things might not have gone so badly if he had quietly smuggled her back out again after a quick bout of horizontal jogging.

Instead he he just shoved her out of his room to roam the corridors until eventually picked up (though not in that sense) by hotel security.

The general manager was hugely displeased when he got the details next morning. Fortunately, he was persuaded not to cancel our press dinner next night in the luxurious Champagne Room. But he still got his revenge. Instead of popping open a case of Bollinger as intended, he made his feelings clear by serving us bog-standard Mateus Rose. All night.
