Emirates ditch their in-flight magazines to save weight

by Neil MacLean on July 21, 2008

As somebody who has written enough in-flight copy to sink a 747, I find this really interesting. Will it set an industry trend to save on fuel? I hope indy publishing companies such as Cedar have a Plan B to cover their airline income. Emirates is axing its in-flight publications in a bid to cut costs to help offset spiralling aviation fuel prices. The airline says the measure will save one tonne of weight on every “superjumbo” jet flight.

I’ve been following all these new fuel-saving initiatives, and can’t help noting the many contraditions. Emirates may have ditched on-board literature to save weight, but it’s also launched new in-flight showers for 1st class passengers – requiring an extra tonne of water to be carried… I’ve written about my recent observations on the Auto Europe blog: http://blog.auto-europe.co.uk
