Today’s lunchtime news included a report on how a reporter from BBC’s Panorama lost his temper while making a programme about Scientology. Or, more accurately, the report dealt with the fact his outburst has already been viewed tens of thousands of times on YouTube. As they say, the idea of an interviewee turning the tables on the media is not new, it is the tools which have changed and became more powerful. As the lunchtime report concluded:
with both sides broadcasting their version of events it’s an illustration of how quickly the media landscape is changing

I was struck by the way the BBC turned the tables back again – by making a news item about it and running it for at least two days (that I saw) on News 24.
In effect they created a promo for the programme. I’m sure the youtube clip got more viewers for the programme, but probably not as many as they got from their own news report .

I was trying to work out the Beeb’s tone when I saw the first report. Maybe something like: “you are going to see this anyway, might as well come from us”. They did turn it into a very effective promo for the programme but I am sure it’s not one they really wanted to run.
