the Postie calls

August 30, 2007

I didn’t really know what a cron job was until this morning but some clients needed an easy way to post to their corporate blog and, having promised them a process as simple as writing an email, I decided to set up proper email posting. Previously I have used Blogmailr but this time I decided to use a native WordPress solution involving the Postie plug-in. After setting up a unique web address on the blog’s domain, I installed Postie and set up a cron job. It transpires a cron performs scheduled tasks on UNIX systems and in this case, I wanted to check the mail server at half-hourly intervals and to pass new mail straight into a blog post. Fortunately, a combination of the instructions in Postie’s readme file and Dreamhost’s user-friendly interface made this comparatively straight- forward. The real test, however, will be whether this post - written in my mail programme - ever appears on the blog.
