On the subject of Petra, I am really glad to say the doors are now open on the Petra Blog, which we have just launched on behalf of the Jordan National Tourist Office. The idea is to provide a central point of information on the ancient city, to aggregate visitor content as they publish their [...]

TravelMail let loose at last
May 14th, 2007 · 2 Comments
The much-delayed, re-sprayed TravelMail site launched this afternoon complete with a movie clip of Petra, Jordan on the front page.
Why is that good? Jordan is a Brighter client, so then this is more of a boast than a disclosure. More on that in a couple of days.
Mind you, TravelMail may have a shiny new skin [...]

BBC on YouTube on the BBC: a reporter reported
May 14th, 2007 · 2 Comments
Today’s lunchtime news included a report on how a reporter from BBC’s Panorama lost his temper while making a programme about Scientology. Or, more accurately, the report dealt with the fact his outburst has already been viewed tens of thousands of times on YouTube. As they say, the idea of an interviewee turning the tables [...]

Mark Warner and Madeleine McCann
May 9th, 2007 · 21 Comments
Search Google for Mark Warner and the Algarve, and it is not suprising that this week’s results are full of articles about the missing toddler Madeline McCann. So how is Mark Warner responding online?
Personally I would have advised them months ago to set up a blog which they could have used for just such a type of crisis. Constant, [...]

Cruising demographics: Poles apart
May 9th, 2007 · No Comments
Two pieces of news which appeared on the horizon at the same time. Saga’s sedate cruisers don’t want to mix with the 18-30 crowd at the captain’s table (or anywhere else come to that), while Royal Caribbean has created a teenagers advisory board for its ships. I suspect item one on the new board’s agenda might be "no old people".

The Travel PR Blog rebooted (yes, again)
May 9th, 2007 · 4 Comments
I have been fiddling with my templates again. This time I wanted to play with the holy trinity of Texmate, Headdress and CSSEdit (yes, I know Coda just came out but I haven’t got to grips with it yet). Proper blog designers (ie. people not anything like me) rave about this combination. And they’re right. Add MAMP, which makes it [...]

Veoh offers customised video channels
May 4th, 2007 · 1 Comment
Back to the Atlantis launch, I am very impressed with the way Veoh, the photo sharing site, has developed. It doesn’t have the exposure of YouTube but it does have some great tools. Take a look at this customised page for the new SeaWorld ride, for example.
Kami Huyse explains some of Veoh’s strengths.
Time Savings: [...]

Travel PR: the impact of negative results in Google
May 4th, 2007 · 4 Comments
Travolution has news of a very useful report on the impact of critical results bubbling up in travel searches.
Over half of British online consumers will turn immediately to a competitor if they see negative reviews of a travel business in search engine results.
The survey by digital marketing agency Tamar said 58% of users would make [...]

Make your video pitch to meeting planners
May 3rd, 2007 · No Comments
I am becoming more interested, almost to the point of obsession, about the potential use of video on travel sites. This report on Travel Mole, reinforces the case for using rich, visual presentations on your hotel web site.
An amazing 61.4% of 192 respondents to MiMegasite.com’s latest poll said they would choose a meeting property based [...]

A roller coaster ride with WordPress
May 3rd, 2007 · No Comments
The new Journey to Atlantis site is hugely impressive, not least because it is built on WordPress. Kami Huyse and Josh Hallett have all the details.
I would like to find a WordPress savvy designer close at hand who could produce that sort of work. If I don’t, I shall look further afield. And just to [...]

Traveller generated content: new report
May 1st, 2007 · No Comments
I am very confused. Hotel Marketing covers a new study of the travel space by Compete, which summarises lessons to be learned from the way three travel brands respond to or integrate consumer generated content. There’s good stuff here such as:
Sheraton Hotels - Integration into eCommerce Platform: In late 2006, Sheraton transformed its website [...]
