Virb (noun): a social network with style
March 12, 2007
MySpace may have the numbers but these days it’s about as cool as your granny’s slippers. I expect all the cool kids are about to switch on to Virb, a social networking site from Unborn Media which just cracked open its doors. I keep reading it is in invitation-only beta, but I walked right in yesterday without a problem and, boy, does it look a lot better than MySpace ever did or ever will.
Any marketer who has tried to design a good looking MySpace site for their brand knows about headaches and the need to lie down in a darkened room for a month. Virb, on the other hand, makes the whole customisation thing easy - if you have CSS experience and know how to spell HTML. A number of designers have already fiddled with the code and the results are inspiring.
Cleverly, when the day comes that every second page starts looking like a dog’s dinner, when the MySpacers arrive with their flashing neon animated gifs, there’s a handy de-customisation button on every site. Switch it off and give your eyes a rest.
The only problem I have with Virb is this: when will I find three days weeks to work on my Virb page before I am not too embarrassed for it to be seen in public?
Now, that’s not something you hear about MySpace.
