OK, not guaranteed. And only for half an hour or so. But Will McInnes scored a hit recently with his 3 simple ways to beat your competition online, observing a 300% spike in visitors thanks to StumbleUpon and a few headline writing hints from Pronet Advertising. I should do that more often myself but you know, as a journalist, I got out of the way of trying to think up good headlines. That was the sub editors’ territory; any brilliance from my pen was always thrown out in preference for their own little puns.

Writing snappy headlines feels a little phoney, a little contrived. It’s not necessarily the most authentic blogging style but it’s worth being aware of for those specifically seeking increased profile and traffic. The rest of the time, who can be bothered? Not me
