Five million Brits live abroad

December 11, 2006

The BBC is doing its bit to encourage emigration not just by revealing how many Brits choose to live abroad but by interviewing only those happy to do so. Or at least that’s how it seems. The statistics make interesting reading, though they beg more questions than they answer (what are those pensioners up to in Cuba? How much rum, how many fat cigars, can they buy for their weekly allowance?).
However everybody they interviewed (admittedly a sparse sample) is having a ball. Apart from missing their families, their solitary symptoms of home sickness seem to centre round Sunday afternoon activities such as drinking beer, watching footie, drinking more beer and eating roast beef. A dripping roast? Not the first thing that would spring to mind if I spent my exile on Bondi Beach.
