Under-size me: McDonald’s rolls out kiddie gyms

December 4, 2006

McDonald’s is trying out kiddie gyms in place of its Play Places in some restaurants in the States. What’s wrong with that? Nothing, as long as they employ extra staff to heft the little fatties onto the exercise bikes.
According to US Today, a child could burn 20 calories on a bike but that will barely dent the 200 he just consumed in his milkshake. Still, if you think of the sugar rush, there could be some pretty impressive pedalling going on.
As a father of a five year old, my big McDonald’s wish is they would advertise those cheap and nasty toys only to kids who ate the fruit and salad. "You want a cute Disney character with that? Then no fries, OK?" Never mind salving their conscience with kiddie gyms. When I want my son to exercise, I’ll go out to the garden with a football. I am hardly likely to go to McDonalds.
