Geotagging physical locations

January 23, 2006

I get very animated at the thought of all the new geocoding and tagging features being rolled out and the impact they will have on communications.

Ogle Earth recently posted about Navizon, a mobile peer to peer positioning system which lets users interact with each other, and about its new tagging function.

This lets people leave virtual messages at a physical location for fellow Navizon users.

For example: You have an atrocious meal at a restaurant, and decide to warn people away: You write a message on your mobile device, tag it (à la Technorati) and post it to Navizon’s server then and there. Anybody else plugged into the network and passing nearby will from now one be altered by it, if they are listening for the right tags.

It would probably need a large carrier to implement this in a big way before it made a significant impact but it’s a powerful application nonetheless.
